Charles Durning as Pappy O'Daniel

Should have gotten an Oscar nomination, and maybe the win. Wonderful performance by a truly great actor.

The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those that speak it.

He was born to play that part and it was so good that he got the opportunity, before he passed.🐭

Ultimate Southern Politician.

Absolutely. Not to mention he had some great lines:

"Weeping Jesus on the cross."

"Why, we'd look like a bunch of Johhny-come-latelys, bragging on our own midget - ain't no matter how stumpy."

"Pappy O'Daniel was displaying rectitude and high-mindedness when that EGGHEAD you work for was still missing his drawers!"

reply

I love that stumpy line. Kills me every time.

reply

He was brilliant!

reply

"Thank God your mama died givin' birth-if she'd a seen ya she'd a died of shame..."

reply

"How da hell we gonna run 're-form' widda incumbent?!"

I still use this line, when people just don't seem to 'get' what I'm saying; it's not a Pappy line, but he set it up:

"Pappy's just makin' a point..."

- Oh, SOMEbody asides me is gonna RUE this here particular day...

Reminded me of his Dancing Governor in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". xD
