Better than I remember
I enjoyed reading the series, and when this movie came out I was pretty underwhelmed. I didn’t think it was a bad movie, just lacking. Books always have more detail and character development, and Left Behind: The Movie felt very by-the-numbers in comparison. I think it would’ve benefited the movie to make it longer, or divide the first book into two movies.
With that said, I watched the movie recently for the first time in several years, and I found that it played pretty well. It could still use more character development, but I thought it flowed better than I remembered. The real star of the movie isn’t Cameron, but rather Gordon Currie. His portrayal of the anti-Christ is spot on, and he reeks of seductive evil.
It’s a shame the novels can’t get a faithful big-budget series made. The Nicolas Cage movie was good, but it deviated too far from the first book. To its credit, it focused more on the immediate aftermath of the Rapture, which, in all honesty, is probably the most exciting and thought-provoking aspect of the entire series.
