hear the first two shots, the ones that actually killed the two men? And did Nikolai really somehow mess with people's heads, supernaturally?

Good questions. I think he was supposed to have, because he was basically telling people what to believe and they were as hypnotized.

Were the two who died actually good men?

Thanks. The two men who died were calculating, but not what he painted them to be; he let Caleb know that he was the one who killed his friends and not the men, as he'd previously said.
