The first US was ok, but the sequel sucked so bad that it went straight to video. How the hell did US the return make it BACK into the theater and even get VanDamme to be in it to boot? I thought once a series went to straight to video that it was doomed to stay there forever (Kickboxer, American Ninja)?
Well, the two straight to video "sequels" were made by a small Canadian Studio and are unofficial sequels. Universal Soldier: The Return is the official sequel to the orignal and takes place as if neither of the TV made sequels happened. Now those TV made sequels are absolutely bloody awful, especially "Brothers In Arms". The scene where the soldiers are introduced to "Spirits In The Sky" was so bad it was hilarious, and the whole production screams of cheapness all over. Universal Soldier: The Return should have gone straight to video, as it looks and feels like a cheesy B-movie in every angle but it's still superior the two Canadian made TV made unofficial "sequels".
UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: THE RETURN does not feel like a B-Movie. It's got it's larger budget and Jean-Claude Van Damme made his return for the starring role, and it ignored the previous two films. Especially since Tri-Star was behind it's distribution, where as said before a Canadian studio was behind parts 2 and 4, being made for TV premiere movies.
I watched part 2 just last night. 1 and 4 are way better, part 2 could have been better but my feelings for movies my own country makes, "The movies could be better, but no one tries as hard, and when they do, their films fail miserably due to bad distribution."
I kinda like this one and number 3 though the 3rd one confused me but i guess i just like cheesy movies they make me laugh the 4th made no sense whats so ever how was he human again and so if they ignored 2 and 3 whos the mother of his daughter? and what happened to her?
