HELP!!

I really enjoyed this movie (great dialogues!), but I totally did not gt the end and the thing they did with the rockets and all, especially the part where Tommy Lee Jones' character is sent to the moon. Could somebody help me...I'd appreciate details to fully comprehend.
Thank you!

guieac, I see it's been a while, but just in case you're still wondering ...

SPOILER ALERT

His character had wanted to go to the moon since youth. You may have noticed that "Fly Me To The Moon" by Sinatra was kinda Hawk's theme. So in the end the team rigs all the nukes to be "piloted" by Hawk, and he takes them to the moon. Apparently he makes a soft landing, disengages from his EVA equipment and gets to a nice, comfy, rock-backed seat from which he can stare at the sky, run out of air and die in peace. This is a good thing because his earth-bound alternative is a slow and painful death from pancreatic cancer.

I've read this ending in a book in some past time, but for the life of me I can't remember title or author.

I hope you get to see this movie again sometime; for me this is one of those cases when knowing the ending makes the entire picture more effective.

The book (actually a short story) is "The Man Who Sold The Moon" by Robert A. Heinlein. The character's name is D. D. Harriman.

swbowman, thank you very much! I was thinking "Harryman" but knew that was incorrect.
