I saw this movie a long time ago but I don't remember much of it. It came on TV tonight, and I've been watching most of it, but how did Tommy Lee Jones' charachter get on the space shuttle? I thought he was diagnosed with cancer and couldn't go? I stepped out of the room while it was on commerial and didn't think I'd miss anything crucial. Whoops... Well any help would be great, thanks.

Clint Eastwood's character pretty much made it clear that if Jone's character wasn't included in the mission, then none of the crew would go. He stated he would train his backup, but everybody knew the mission stood no chance of success unless Clint went up to fix the satellite. It was his guidance system and the newbie didn't understand it.
So basically, Clint blackmailed his was into space, then plaid hardball to get Tommy Lee Jone's up there with him.
Clint Eastwood told James Cromwell he would train the back-up crew, but he wasn't going without Tommy Lee Jones. He then left. Marcia Gay Harden then said that Jones was in otherwise good health and would be able to complete the mission. Harden then went and told Eastwood that Jones would be able to go.
