I saw the movie on TNT last night and was puzzled by a few things because I could not hear the script. Clint mumbles a lot using his croaky voice!
First, what was the apparent renegade astronaut doing (or intend to do) to the damn satellite when it exploded?
Second, what was the bit about Hawk (Tommy Jones) fixing his gear to the Ikon satellite and taking the ride to the moon?

1. Trying to fix the guidance system - the job that Clint was refusing to do after he figured out what Ikon really was.
2. Hawk was guiding the missiles away from Earth.

Thank God for CC! i go nuts if i'm trying to watch something with the family, and someone gets peeved by the space the captioning takes. i just say,"ok, so take it off, so it doesn't bother you. but be prepared to repeat EVERYTHING that i can't hear!" <G> so i wind up watching stuff on my computer alone,more often than not.
The DVD is very clear on everything, even without the closed captions. Maybe TNT edited important things out to fit those annoying commercials.
The renegade astronaut was part of a plot with the Russian and the guy played by Cromwell to put the satellite back into orbit...Russia would still have nukes trained on the US and Cromwell's part in how the guidance system from a US space project ended up on this weapons platform would be kept a secret.
Hawk had pancreatic cancer and wasn't going to live to long anyway. He had ostensibly no family or connections on earth (except the budding one with Sarah, the engineer played by Marica Gay Hardin with the awful hairdo). So he volunteered to sacrifice himself to guide the satellite with the nukes toward the moon...someplace he had always wanted to go.
