I remember my grandmother objected to John Glenn's Discovery flight. She thought space travel was for the young. "Galloping around the cosmos is a game for the young" is a quote that comes to mind... I disagree with her, I think space is for everyone.

Geezer on geezer ageism is an ugly thing.

No, the movie was conceptualized before Glenn's flight, but considered implausible until Glenn successfully went up, thus making the movie now more credible.

At one point, during an argument with the James Cromwell NASA administrator guy, I believe either Frank or Hawk makes reference to the Glenn flight.
