Tank was kinda useless in this.

Just a boring character that had nothing important to say, had no relationships with anyone, didn't do anything the whole movie, and was played by an uncharismatic actor.

I'll agree that he was kinda useless in this movie, but don't blame the actor he could only do so much with what he had.

Yeah, they did seem to keep him on the sidelines and I had to wonder why. Jimmy Garner is a great actor and I wondered if he really didn't want to bother with this one. But I LOVED this movie. I'm a huge Clint fan and had never seen this before or Pink Cadillac or HonkyTonk Man - I watched them all recently and loved them all. Clint just knows his stuff!

Yeah, he was like the Ringo Starr of the four. Donald Sutherland was hilarious, though.

They could have put in more stuff for him to do, but would you have wanted an extra 20-30 minutes to develop his character? I would have liked to have seen him to be a little more pro-active in the movie.

Garner is an great actor, its not his fault the writers didn't really explore his character.

They could have dumped one of the numerous "Jerry as a horny old goat" scenes, which got boring and monotonous (OK OK OK we get it, he is a horny old goat) and put in another scene or two which explained his character a little better.

My guess is there had to be four of them so there would only be 2 extra astronauts (who conveinently get knocked out).
There were some funny lines for him at the beginning, the church stuff.
And the movie was long enough already.
And don't forget the hula girl.
