Tommy Lee Jones is too young compared to others

Tommy L. Jones did a good job as Hawk Hawkins but he was too young for the role, in 2000 he was 54, whereas Clint was 70, Garner was 72 and Sutherland was 65.

At first of the movie, the staff is in 1958, therefore Clint should be 28 years old, Garner 30, Sutherland 23 and Tommy... 12 years old!!

Maybe they needed a younger actor for all the running about.

When the film was first announced, Jack Nicholson, a golf buddy of Eastwood, was cast in the part. A release at the time referenced him having played an astronaut previously in Terms of Endearment. Later he backed out, but no reason was given to my recollection. All that was mentioned was that Jack was out and Tommy Lee Jones was in.

I thought that it was Sean Connery who was slated for that role. Point is that, while I love Tommy Lee Jones he was too young for the role. There were plenty of older actors who would have fit the role age wise.

James Coburn, for instance.

Exactly. TLJ, like him or not, is not known for his youthful appearance. I might add that he was playing a character in a movie that is in the same age group as the other three, in other words......ACTING. In "The Graduate", the actress that played Mrs. Robinson was only six years older than Dustin Hoffman, but she didn't look out of place in her part.

It ruins it a little bit if you know the facts going in... Sure, you can act older, but the performer has no control over how youthful their face looks - and despite what you said, he did NOT look 65! That's not his fault, but still...

Some of the many capable actors who were in the general age range would've made more sense. That being said, TLJ was still great to watch, providing you're able to ignore the age disparity.

Indeed! As I said it in other thread TLJ could be James Garner's son! Tommy is 18 years younger than Mr. Garner.

Yeah, but Tommy Lee Jones looked 54 in 1990.

Guess no one here subscribes to the concept that when you're ACTing your ACTual age is immaterial.

That's why they call it ACTING.
