The point in Sutherlands glasses...

What was the point in Sutherlands "sun" glasses. The only thing i could come up with is so people thought he didn't need glasses because they looked like regular sunglasses.

Sorry I can't hear you over the thousands of fans screaming my name.

That was the point.

They didn't want NASA to think that they were too old to go to space, they wanted to pass the health test. That is why he cheated on the vision exam. But he still needed the glasses to do everyday tasks. So I'm guessing that the doctor saw this and got the glasses for him.

Yeah, if you notice, she said the glasses are actually in his prescription, so while they look like sunglasses, they're actually still corrective lenses.

I sometimes wonder if people actually WATCH the films they comment on.

The woman cared for his character and she felt it would be a nice gesture, a treat for him and have the added bonus of him feeling 'proud' on the event of his lifetime rather than having to look like he wasn't up to it (with poor vision). The shades were specially designed to replace his everyday glasses, so he could see, but in the disguise of sunglasses. It's called humanity, often many trivial matters are carried out for the sake of 'love' or pride and things like that added a more human touch to the 'typical space story'.

Well, in fairness, if someone watches the movie on television they might miss something (maybe they didn't catch the entire flick beginning to end, maybe something was cut for time, etc.).

i cant find the reference again, but i read somewhere that he has strabismus, and it was to hide the eye. i was just watching the movie, and when he has his glasses off, he is usually not standing square to the camera, which also would help hide it. i have the same problem, but more pronounced, and it freaks people out. he must have a mild case, to have had such a long career as an actor.
