Every time the past changed, John had in his head both the old past and the new one, yet everyone else he encountered only had the changed past in their heads?

I think because he knows about the changes and is at the centre of them. It's like when you throw a rock into a pond and see the ripples that emulate from it. John is the rock and everyone else around him is affected by the ripples except him.

"He murders his wife every night. Other than that, I think he's pretty harmless."
