So did the actors and filmakers make any money off this?

Like I know it made a couple hundred million but did the actors and directors get any of that? Also how did this thing make it to so many theaters? I mean there are multimillion dollar films that dont have as big of releases as this thing did. Also what cost 60,000 dollars? Seems like this could of been done for the cost of about 10k. All youd need is food, backpacking supplies and a half dozen cameras and GPS.

The actors didn't see a bit of it. The film makers/production company raked in all the money. It's a shame really.

How did they get it into so many theaters?

reply

Because after Sundance the film was bought by an international distributer for $1 million, and they put it in all the cinemas, where it raked in $248 million in profits

reply

Why is it a shame? the producers and film makers were the ones with balls, brains and drive to make it, not to mention all the advertising they did. The actors just did their jobs.

I know Josh is still acting...but Mike and Heather's acting career pretty much dried up. It's a shame one of them doesn't try to capitalize on the experience and write a book about their time doing it...or something like that. Hell I'd buy it. I love this movie. I just hate that it didn't really help the actors any.

What actors?

If I don't reply, you're probably on my ignore list for something I forgot already

Nice...

I remember reading that each actor made 1k each and that long after it was released they were each given 5 million each but again, i can provide no citation.

reply

5 million each wouldnt be so bad. especially in 1999. Seems like fair compensation for a shot in the dark that no one knew would turn into something. I hope that is true. You could easily live off that the rest of your life and still be pretty comfortable.

reply

Not sure about $5m, yet I do seem to remember hearing they each received some amount of bonus gratuity for being part of it all.

It would make perfect sense for the sake of publicity for the film company to compensate the actors after it achieved such financial success. Especially considering a remake was basically demanded by the public. Otherwise we would have seen all sorts of moaning and groaning from the original cast in the public media.

They didn't see a dime. The actors said each of them was sent a fruit basket when the film grossed $100M.

However, they asked Mike to re-shoot the ending after it premiered at Sundance and said he was paid more for the re-shoot than he was for the actual prior filming.

The 3 people died at the end. Who would they pay?

lol

I read it was $150'000 or so for the three stars. No idea about the producers/directors. From the new Second Sight documentary, nobody expected the film to make much, and it was mostly a DIY job. They just wanted enough to help with their next project, so I guess nobody was thinking too much about %'s when the Artisan deal was signed.
