Cruise would have been aware of this project and would have known to stay the heck away. Muscavage and the other Scientologist "brain" trust would have loved to have Travolta and Cruise on the same L. Ron Hubbard film, so I suspect Cruise had that offer, or encouragement, but he knew this wasn't a good idea and it wouldn't work and he ran the other way. And/or he hates Travolta's guts for being another high-profile Scientologist actor and he didn't want to help him in any way.
