Was anybody actually excited to see this movie when it came out?

Looking at the trailers and other advertisements for this I can't imagine anyone would've been any bit interested in seeing this movie. Was the general consensus when the first trailer hit that John Travotla was committing career suicide? Also, was it any bit controversial becuase it had to do with Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard in particular( being based on his book)?

Also, I've heard the book is actually really good, just how much different is it compared to the movie?

My ignore list is quite large.

Sure, but I was 14 and didn't know any better. All I saw was John Travolta being a badass alien and lots of explosions.

I'm pretty sure the scientology thing wasn't a big deal when this first came out. People didn't really start hating/making fun of scientology until Tom Cruise went crazy.
