This is the first time in years that I stopped watching a film. After 40 minutes. Really boring. Generally I agree with the film-addicted people's 'common sense' (I am one myself), but I just can't figure out why this one got in the top 250... did I miss something?!

Yes. You missed the rest of the film. Perhaps you should revisit it before trying to critique it.
