Does anyone know if it is possible for a baby of an HIV positive mother to live HIV free? Are there any special cases like that of the movie?

Hi, sure it's possible. If the mother reduces her viral load by taking her anti-HIV medication before birth and the baby is born by caesarean. They minimise bleeding by cauterising the inscision I think (burning the cut to reduce bleeding) and wash the baby immediately to get rid of the blood.

70% of infants born to HIV positive mothers do not develop the disease. As long as the mother has cesarean. I watched an HIV positive woman give birth on the Discovery Channel and they also use a suction to suction any excess blood before it hits the baby. There have also been incidents where children born with the virus were HIV free before their first birthday. No one knows why but some doctors think some childrens immune systems may have a unique characteristic that allowed it to overcome the virus or the virus was defective and couldnt continue replicating in the child.
