speaking of the NUN

the 1 thing that made me flinch a little was when rosa says she likes to say the words 'cock' and sumthing else, towards the end, wen agrado, her, manuela & huma are all in manuela's house...the scene wen manuela asks huma if agrado can work 4 her. rosa's comment i found a bit disturbing. it made the possibility of rosa being a nun very hard 2 believe. it was hard enuf believing that she would get herself pregnant but all of sudden, she likes 2 say 'cock?' and she's laughing along to sexual jokes? i dont think so.

let's be frank mate, all of Almodovar's characters are eccentric. a lot of his story lines are VERY unusual and are impossible to imagine happening in real life. a nun acting like this is part of Almodovar's dark sense of humour. it's unthinkable in the real world.

that's how i interpret things anyway.

She is believable -- as a nun who's really bad at it.

Just because she's a nun doesn't mean she's asexual. You're allowed to be a nun and giggle at the same time.

reply

Nuns are still human...who knows what goes on behind those convent doors...

Oh please, she was a YOUNG nun and clearly not the blessed virgin herself! I find it strange that you can't fathom that a nun such as Rosa could enjoy using the word, "cock" but you didn't mention any trouble believing she'd have had an affair with a transsexual!

As someone else said, Almadovar's characters are ALWAYS eccentric. That's part of what makes his films so great. I think this movie is a masterpiece.

I'm sure nuns have done a lot worse than say 'cock' and 'prick' (just watch The Magdalene Sisters!); I don't think it's particularly shocking. Hell, it's not even blasphemy (as far as I know).

reply

I think it's a little more 'shocking' to think of a nun having sex and getting pregnant..............and by a transsexual, no less. No, but let's take offense to her using the word 'cock' in a sentence.

I have to agree with originator of this thread. I clearly enjoy Pedro Almodovar's movies and if you watch more than one, as I have, you clearly get what he's trying to accomplish with the outlandish. But there's definitely an art to getting the audience to suspend their disbelief and he's not perfect it at all the time. There was something about that one scene on the couch that was out of place. As a matter of fact I didn't even buy her sleeping with a transvestite. This doesn't equal a nun not having a sex drive in the real world. People are so aggressive on imdb on some of these threads that they miss the point.

Out of all the things I keep thinking about with this movie, I keep wondering how he could have pulled it off differently. Maybe it was Penelope Cruz's portrayal of it that wasn't working, I am still not sure.

reply

It was just a joke he used in the movie.
She said:
"Me gusta la palabra 'polla' y 'pollo'."
wich means:
I like the word 'dick' and 'chicken'.

and she didn't seem like a nun, i thought she was someone who just helped people get back on there feet to the right path.
And nuns are the ones who are dressed like in the movie 'Entre Tinieblas' or for people who didn't saw that one 'Sister Act'

I didn't see her as a nun, but more of an aspiring nun, someone who was "studying" or preparing herself to become a nun. I loved that lil part of the movie, it shows that everybody is only human after all.
