Yes, I saw the play on Wednesday at the Old Vic, and I thought it was (surprisingly!) very good. I say 'surpisingly' because Almodovar's films IMO, have this energy and campness and "theatricity" (not even a word, I know!) that made me think that they can't possibly be transferred to the stage, because they'd end up like a burlesque/cabaret show gone wrong.
Thankfully, as it turns out, *I* was the one who was wrong. The set design, the lighting and the sound get 10/10. I enjoyed the extra monologues by Agrado and Esteban, although I felt the latter lacked the charisma and melancholy the original character conveyed. Lesley Manville as Manuela was excellent if not better than Cecilia Roth, and Mark Gatiss compensated for a mediocre Rosa.
And before I bore myself as well as everyone else reading this, I'll wrap this post up (my first one, btw, pop!) by saying that it was a good play, the director had very good intentions, (it gets a 7.5/10 from me) but don't watch the film BEFORE you see the play, even if it is to refresh your memory. They're not the same animal, keep an open mind.
