Masterpiece ?

i'm sorry, but I can't think of it in that way,I was counting the number of times she cried by saying "my son died" and it really got boring to hear..there was really too much drama, but really, too much..

Other than that,well...yeah,its a nice movie, great colors, and all..but it just didn't do the trick for me..

Just please, don't post something negative if it's just gonna waste my time, because I'm not here to fight..

If someones can, explain to me why this is so overrated,

Thanks

bye :)

I enjoyed this film but I think it is far from being a masterpiece. It had some great quirky characters, wonderful performances and a couple of memorable moments but it did tend to be too melodramatic at times and wasn't particularly visually insipiring. And overall I didn't quite conect with the story either. Very rarely did I feel any empathy for the characters' situations since I felt very detached from their reality.

They call me MISTER Jinx

I don't think it's overrated at all.

To me, it is a good film, a great film, a masterpiece? Well, who knows, depends on the "critic". And what exactly IS a masterpiece anyway? I'm sure you could name some masterpieces. Some big Bergman, some Fellini, Some Truffaut and Godard and Kurosawa, Kubrick, Tarantino, Tarkovsky, Antonioni, Einstein, Buñuel, maybe some Douglas Sirk, definitely some Wells, what about some Wes Anderson, Ridley Scott, Jarmusch, or Allen, or Gibson? In fact, what about some Russ Meyer or Ed Wood?
Now...what about Almodovar?
Now there are certainly a lot of "Masterpieces" out there. A lot of the directers previously listed have directed so called "masterpieces". But there is no distinguishing mark or factor that is common to all masterpieces. What one man deems masterpiece another man deems trash. There are certainly some generally accepted masterpieces that I do not particularly enjoy watching. Some that bore me to death and do not move or stimulate me in the slightest. I'm sure that's the case with you, and everyone. We have personal preferences and expectations for what we hope to find in a film that we love. Apparently this film did not deliver what you were looking for. That's fine, but it certainly gave me all and more than I was hoping to get out of it. And that goes for a lot of other people too. I like a lot of movies and a lot of different kinds of movies. This is up there towards the top of my list. I don't mean tippy top, but I enjoyed it immensely. It made me cry, multiple times. I was engrossed in it from start to finish. My emotions were on a roller coaster. I love this film. Is it a masterpiece? To me, maybe, almost, eh...yes. Because I enjoyed it so perfectly. I'm sorry you weren't able to find the same level of emotional and intellectual stimulation. I'm sure your personal preferences allow you to recieve the same from movies that don't happen to do anything for me at all.

Overrated or Underrated? Those that exalt this film probably really absolutely loved it and were moved it. Their rating matched their level of identification and stimulation. Your rating did the same.

Do you know how it feels (the pain, the endless pain) when your child has died, especially under circumstances as depicted in this movie? Obviously not

It might have been better if you had "watched" the film rather then counting.

10/10 in my book.

reply

exactly, theres nothing less natural than having to bury your child. its one of the most harrowing scenarios i could ever imagine finding myself in, god forbid it to ever happen.

All of her crying scenes were right on the spot. The weird thing would have been if she didn't cry. Man, she was devastated. About the whole 'masterpiece' thing, well, I wouldn't go that far, tho it all depends on people's taste. I think it is a wonderful film I do, but no masterpiece in my book.

i think this film is a masterpiece, i've just watched the film and my initial thoughts are just that, but it's still a 9/10 at this stage... or quite possibly a non-commital 10/10. regardless, it falls under my criteria for a masterpiece and i'll explain why.

with the whole "masterpiece" theory, it's a hard one, if you want it to be... or it can be simple::

- did the picture totally move you?
- could u pick a major fault in the film?
- do u believe the director achieved his goal, therefore delivered the perfect picture based on the script?

well if these are all yes, then it is a masterpiece...

i've been rating films (on imdb) for a few years now, and that is in general too, before imdb i didn't rate but then decided to do so. initially i deemed it impossible to coin a picture "perfect", for many reasons, the main one being "what is perfect"? and "how can i declare something as perfect"... after sometime, i re-defined my theory on 10/10's, i started to act on instinct with films, and started to change my standards, as there are many films i've watched numerous times, that i believe are flawless and if i was to announce, would be "masterpieces"... so i started to lock in many of my fave films the big 10/10 mark, but trying not to over do it, cause i want to be sure i believe it is perfect for what it is, and not be "stuck in the moment" and mark the movie down after the butterfly's go away (which has happened...)

to add to this whole process, i also have recently coined a large part of my 9's as "non-commital 10's", cause i feel it will go up to 10 on next viewing, or with more digestion / thought over time... plus i still mark many a film at 8, but that still might go up to a 10, so it's my base masterpiece safety net for some... even tho others only deserve an 8 at best and i don't consider a masterpiece...

overall, majority of the films i've given either 9 or 10 to ARE masterpieces, as they fall under the 3 point criteria i've mentioned above... but in more recent times i've also gone by the "shiver factor", that being if i watch a film and by the end get the shivers, normally my realisation that what i've just witnessed is genius, then that is an automatic masterpiece... and quite often a 10.... or a non-commital 10.... u get the idea!.... i hope... for more info on my definition of great films, see my vote history at http://www.imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=6994298
