i have watched a few of his movies , notably . talk to her ...and i sat down to watch thisone with huge expectations ...it fell short of expectations by far ....talk to her is one of my all time favourites , this one feels contrived and it didnt move me much , i dint like the technique , didnt like the eprformances .. half way through the film i got distracted , didnt wnat tro watch any futher . it was way too mushy at taimes...just didnt work iwth me or may be i didnt understand it ....the whole actress thing , theobsession with the play....didnt understand it perhaps.
Let me try to help you because I can see where you might have gotten lost. "A Sreetcar Named Desire" almost mirrors Manuela's life and has had a huge impact on her future. She acted in it as a young woman and met her husband this way, she was inspired by it to change her life, it was the last play she saw before her son died and it is her return to Barcelona where the play goes after Madrid that leads to her relationship with Huma, Rosa and La Agrado.
"Streetcar" is the story of a woman who is married to an abusive and volatile man and by the end of the story she sees no other way of alleviating her situation other than by leaving him. Manuela's own husband Esteban/Lola treated her like sh*t and for the sake of her baby and herself, she left him.
I'm surprised you weren't moved by the movie because to me it is his most moving to date. It's a story about the loneliness, strength, joy and sorrow that comes with being a mother. Each of the main women we meet also embody what it means to be a woman in that a woman is at all times a mother, an actress, a saint and a sinner (like the trailers for it state).
I have stressed this before and will stress it again... watch AAMM WITHOUT ANY EXPECTATIONS!! Anytime you watch a movie "with high expectations", of course you will be disappointed because you are not giving the film enough credit. You shouldn't expect anything from a particular movie, just watch it and enjoy it for what it is, not how it compares to "Talk to Her". Try watching it again expectations free and see if you don't have a better experience.
well , i completely understood the parallels between manuela's life and the play...and also the events that happened in her life like meeting her husband during a performance and losing her son aftre watching the play ...all that is easily understood ..all that amounts to serendipity of some sort and does not really move me ...bt wat i really didnt understand was the way she got offered a job with huma and the significance of it ..and what kind of redemption she got or felt by enacting the role nina would usually play(she layed it as a young girl when she met her husband , thats easily understood )...so that didnt move me either ...and itseemed too harsh on the mother's character( mother to sister mria roza played by penelope cruz) and too forgiving of 'lola' ...and jus the humor and everything else about the screenplayand dialogues is not what i expected(now thats expectations)...but evevn without expectations i would have never taken too much of a liking to the film...and i still say may be i didnt understand it .
im kind of with you on this one film buffy....though this was my first pedro movie...i do watch alot of films.
i did like the quirkiness of the movie and some of the symbolism i.e. streetcar named desire, the dad being a tailor...but there were too many things that happen in the movie which i thought completely unrealistic and unbelievable.
i know this sounds a bit silly cos its a film but it just seemed unrealistic that Manueala and rosa became so close so quickly...i guess she knew the she was carrying her exs child...but still...suddenly taking her in and looking after her like she her daughter.
also the how manuela suddenly ends up randomly getting a PA job for the actress...and then performign the part of stella...hello what about the understudy. It just seemed too random...
i know its a movie...but i think its the job of the director to convey a believeable story whether its a movie about martians attacking earth or a grieving mother trying to find her transexual ex-partner. It all adds to you feeling for the characters...which i hardly did...except for Lola...but dont get me started about her little impromptu performance on the stage.
i also got the dvd for talk to her...and will be watching that this weekend.
exactly how i saw it!! ..so may be i wasnt wrong in not really liking th emovie. yeah how abt manuela and rosa becoming so colse so quickly . you said it pash 'whether its a movie abt martians attacking earth ....' . yes lola's character did move me , she was this sorry figure you wanted to hate but could not and instead you empatise with him. .. well do watch talk to her and get back if you can . i am sure you will like that one..now thats another far fetched out plot but it is conveyed nicely.
You are both very confused. This film is the one with which Almodovar reinvented the genre of melodrama. the crying is entirely intentional and well plotted. through manuela's crying we are moved... and not only through emotions, but also the plot. And also, by watching "habla con ella" it is obvious that Almodovar does not believe in coincidence but rather in fate and/or destiny, therefore, the job involving huma rojo plays a huge part. Manuela was offered the job with huma because of her loyalty and trustworthiness. as far as the story goes she is offered the job because of the homage to "All about eve" where a PA learns, or knows, the part of the lead and takes over. It is all a clever subtext and device to move the plot along. She is also offered this job because all throughout the film, as the title conveys, she plays the mother of our characters: Esteban, Rosa, agrado, huma, nina, and even rosa's mother and lola. her motherhood and responsibility to others is her only vice. As far as the "redemption" she got from playing nina's part, there is none. she knows that part from before and had to play it again. however, what is important is her reaction to her childbirth. it is enacted with the same emotion as was when she lost her child. very moving. this is another parellel of the play and her life. as are as her three estebans, the father, the son, the holy spirit, and her sacred book, esteban's journal. as far as lola goes, she may be the most monstruous character almodovar has created since Paul bazzo in KIKA and followed by Juan in LA MALA EDUCACION. i don't see any sympathy for her as far as humanity goes, but then again that is why she is stricken with AIDS. LOLA appears as the embodiment of death. only at rosa's funeral are we introduced to her and Manuela calls her an epidemic. Of course there is sympathy for lola but definitely not as much as is given to manuela. Lola is sympathized for because it is the nature of true christian love. a force that drives the films of almodovar. as rosa states: it is her duty to care for those, no matter how long she knows them, or what she does. a topic most notable in almodovar's films.
so as far as pash says, i answered the question: manuela becomes close because she is, at heart, a mother. this instinct is not something she can shake. she quickly grows bonds with many chracters in the film. not just rosa. also, the part od manuela playing stella is answered above. and whatever impromtu performance by lola you are taling about pash. it does not exist.
since neither of us have lived in barcelona (i've only been there once), it is not safe to judge the acts of those there. therefore, your analogy involving martians is highly ineffective.
the main thing that struck me was maybe not so much Manuala being so helpful to Rosa, but Rosa, after meeting someone a day earlier, who she knew was a prostitute, suddenly asking for all these favours like moving in with her!!! thats pretty unbelievable... and even ur answer about Manuela being a mother at heart, which is why she let a stranger move in with her and look after her is also not very convincing. It would make sense that because she is a mother, she would look after Rosa's child after she died, but not the initial things...
anyway in general this movie was good, but nothing special. Most of it was too far-fetched to be able to relate to, and the stuff that wasn't moved at a too quick pace.
