women in almodovar films

while everyone seems to be getting worked up about the deep meanings behind Almodovar's films can I just say that I find it a revelation in the roles he writes for women. For so long, the only female roles Hollywood seems comfortable with are big busted, vacant nymphs who are completley one dimensional, eye candy for the male viewer and never seemed to be developed as characters in their own right. How refreshing to watch a film such as Todo sobre mi madre and see how it celebrates women. Mothers, sisters, friends, lovers, relationships are explored. I don't think I have ever seen anything as moving as the scene when Esteban is hit by the car and Manuela cradles her dead son.I defy anyone not to be moved by this scene. Or when Penelope Cruz's dad fails to recognise her in the square with Sapic. Hollywood can never come close to developing characters as intensley as European cinema can and taking us on a personal journey with them, as Hollywood is always so "plot driven" and dictated by what the producers and financial backers want. I adore this film for it's script characters and especially it's design and cinematography. The film world is a better place for having Autuers like Almodovar and David Lynch in it!

I agree, what makes Almodovar so brilliant is the way he seems so in tune with the essence of womanhood and femininity, I don't think I've seen such truth, poignancy and depth to female characters in film, whereas most directors choose one facet of woman, going towards the stereotypical Almodovar shows that women, more than men are never just one thing, we can be so many contradicting things at once. I love his work and I LOVE this film, I first saw it in a cinema in France when I was 11/12 and have watched it countless times and I'm still just as moved by it.
