Why the age and measurement questions?

I apologize in advance if this has already been answered and I realize this is not important to understanding the film any better but it was just a whimsical interesting tidbit that I noticed when watching this film.

Why did Rosa's father always ask that question? Did it have something to do with what he use to do for a living? Which wasn't explained in the film?

Was he a tailor? a doctor?

Did it serve a specific point or was it just random nonsense from a senile old man?

Gracias.

I actually just saw this film today in my film class. I think it was to show that even without the fathers full memory and full awareness he was still only concerned with the outside and basic information about a person. I think it was to show that the world of his daughter and grandson (what with pregnant nuns, transvestites, and AIDs) was outside and beyond his understanding.
