Don't understand how Esteban died if he was chasing the car?

We are watching this for my Spanish class and i am confused as to how her son died if he was chasing the car did he run in front of it? Or did it back up on him? Since the movie doesn't even really show it, it wasn't very clear.

It was another car.

He was hit by a car when he tried to chase the taxi (the taxi turned right, Esteban ran behind it and a car was coming down the road Esteban and the taxi turned to)

I was confused by this at first too, and I even wondered if he overtook the car and jumped in front of it for some odd reason, but then later I realised that it was another car that hit him.

How can people be so stupid to not see a car that came from his left run him over? That happens when you cross the street without looking first 
