What did the song have to do with the movie?

I have wondered this for years. Another dumb blonde? There were no blondes in this movie and the meaning of the song doesn't fit with the story? It wasn't about a relationship. The only thing remotely relating to the song was some guy like this girl and she didn't care much. But she had black hair.

I think it's about Hal chosing Lane over Claire and that hal is not another dumb blone if though he's not even a blonde lol
