plot hole?!

I love this film for a fun way to pass the time but one thing that has always irked me is when sailing to england the main three boys are asked how long they been away ... roland clearly states 5 years and william states twelve years however in the flashback roland was there when william first comes over to work for the knight(forget the name) so how is it possible that roland is only 5years as i cant see u having time off being a squire and they was moaning about starving at start of film so clearly roland didnt have the money to go back to england either... Any ideas? I still enjoy the film but when this scene comes on i get irked cause i cant rationlise it so is it jus one big plot hole or anyone got ideas to get around it? Thanks x

Roland could've been sent to England by their knight to pick up something only to meet back up with them at a prearranged time and place.

Couple possibilities. First, as the other guy said, Roland could have been sent to England for something on behalf of his knight. Another possibility, and the one I personally believe, is that William simply never came back because his father basically to go out and make something of himself and to follow his footsteps back home when he did. Since he hadn't done that until the events of the movie, he simply couldn't go home. That plus he believed his father had died years earlier.

Sir Ector was at one point quite successful as a competitor, so I think the starving thing is more recent as his health and skills have started to decline, meaning he isn't earning like before. I figured that Roland and Wat had simply taken time off and traveled back home to visit family over the course of their careers with Sir Ector while William had not. Like one of the previous posters stated, William probably didn't want to go back until he made something of himself.
