Does anyone know why they chose Massena, NY (of all places) for one of the locations?

Having lived in the area briefly for school, it seems to be a really odd place to pick to base any movie story on. Does anyone know if there is anything to it, aside from the writers possibly just closing their eyes and pointing to a map?

I have no idea. I grew up in that area, though, I can assure it was NOT filmed on location.
