My guess is that Shonte's original "let's boogie" line when he's trying to start something with Charlie, would have come back to haunt him. Layla might have gotten the same treatment that the bratty jump-rope girl got.

Charlie probably was set up. Shonte Sr. does say that he is only driving the limo as part of a "sociological experiment." I don't think it's ethical or even legal to use violence on your test subjects as Shonte did.
