I've heard so many people over the years talk about how the honeymooners condoned domestic violence. Everytime I hear this narrative I chuckle, because they missed the joke
Jackie gleason's character was a blow hard. He liked to make demands, complain, Make a scene like a little kid, etc., and his wife would laugh at him and tell him to do it himself. He would then say something like "one of these days....pow, right in the kisser" andthe audience would laugh.
Why were they laughing? Did she apologize after he said that and do as she was told? Did she flinch or grimace thinking about the abuse? No. She laughed at him, knowing he had no argument and all he could do was make these ridiculous threats which he would never carry through
That was the humor. i don't understand why so many don't get the bit...
In real life of course, I'd be scared as hell if my brother in law talked like that, as its a weird joke. But it's lerrextly normal in TV land, where an old man talking about putting lotion on high school boys legs is also not seen as a serious threat....
