Why are all the animated show creators atheists?

Matt Groening- Atheist
Seth MacFarlane- Atheist
Trey Parker and Matt Stone- Both Atheists
Mike Judge- Unknown at the time.

What's with 4 of my 5 heroes in comedy and television being atheists? Is it a requirement to not believe in creation of a world and in return perform a career where you do create a world yourself. I just don't know what it is with these animated show creators and atheism.

reply

Perhaps they see religion for the farce that it is.

When I saw the title and the OP's name I thought he would be an atheist,

Droid please.

A few bad apples don't spoil the whole bunch though. What i'm trying to say is, religious or not, we all just want to be part of something, yes even you atheists banding together because you choose to not follow religion or be agnostic are still a group. I personally don't understand the concept of religion bashing, I would think atheists could find more productive things to do with their time. If a person is going to believe in anything, it should be there individual choice, this includes making up your own rules/beliefs in life. Live and let live.

I guess it is interesting that all of the creators happen to be atheists, not like it means anything though. They are just people who enjoy creating cartoons and the lives they live.

The more personalities you have the less boring you are!

I'm an atheist. I don't need to "band together" with other like minds. I don't "bash" religion at all. I simply don't believe in god. That's it. Please don't lecture me on how I act when you honestly don't know.

reply

Why does it bother you?

reply

Because I'm religious and at the same time love these guys, but it's hard when I find out none of them believe in God. It makes me feel conflicted in my support.

reply

I like how your screen name is Independent Thinker, yet you can't form an independent thought that goes against your religion.

It makes me feel conflicted in my support.

Hopefully against your god? Though there probably haven't been any who've been converted by watching cartoons.

Matt & Trey are not atheists?

reply

Matt and Trey went on Penn Jillette's program and did a Qand A where they both admit they're atheists. You can watch it on youtube. Matt Stone is a definite Atheist.

reply

Trey made fun of atheism in God God Go and they talk about it in the commentary; he also said: "Out of all the ridiculous religion stories — which are greatly, wonderfully ridiculous — the silliest one I’ve ever heard is, ‘Yeah, there’s this big, giant universe and it’s expanding and it’s all going to collapse on itself and we’re all just here, just because… That to me, is the most ridiculous explanation ever"

reply

That quote is mainly on the Big Bang which a lot people, theist and atheist alike believe, and what a lot of people, atheist and theist alike, find crazy in terms of the randomness of it. Humans like to think everything has a specific meaning or purpose, but the beginning of the universe didn't have one.

You can believe in something and still laugh at it. Only religion demands you take every bit of nonsense seriously and po-faced.

Matt Groening is more respectful towards christians than Trey, Matt, and Seth

Most artists are atheists or non-practicing. And liberal. I guess it's because conservative religious people don't want to change things. They are happy with that, what they got (or what they had). Liberal people on the other side want to explore new things. They are openminded for new ideas. I know not everyone is like this. But exceptions prove the rule.

I was brought up Catholic, but I now identify as a lapsed/secular Catholic. That being said, Matt Stone, Trey Parker, and Seth MacFarlane are atheists, but Matt Groening is an agnostic but he is not an atheist. Some agnostics also double as atheists, but Matt does not.

Why are all the animated show creators atheists?

Maybe it has to do with their cultural context or whatever.

There are other attributes that certain groups of people share, despite there not being an obvious reason why this is the case in the first place.

For example, did you notice that basically every single celebrity that is a TV/movie actor or a singer is also a smoker? Why is that the case?

reply

Trey Parker is agnostic. Only Matt Stone is atheist.

And it's probably due to the crossover between the two in areas like non-conformity, intelligence, coming from a certain degree of privilege, being artists and living in L.A., etc, etc.
