How Do They Make A Return On Initial Investments?

In the movie when they're doing a pitch they always say something to the people on the phone like, "start with a small investment of X shares and let me show you 3 points on the return" as a way to gain the clients trust by making them a small return on an initial investment. But if they're pitching "dog *beep* and fake stocks how do they show this return before going back to the client with another larger investment?

These pitches are happening during the "pump" part of "pump n dump." The small investment will make money cause they're all pushing the same stock, which will then entice a larger investment before it all crashes.
