Wait, why wasn't this an echo???

So at the end of the movie, as John explains to Lamar how he got away with the murder of Anne Lively. While this is happening, Agatha starts dreaming about the murder. The techs are shocked because Agatha is dreaming about a past murder...

Here's the problem...

This is called an echo. Sometimes the precogs relive the really horrible murders. Standard protocol: disregard and delete. But this, oh no, this isn't an echo. This is something different.

My question is why was this not an echo? And while were at it, what was the difference between an echo and Anne Lively's murder?

Where was it stated that it wasn't an echo?

It was indeed an echo, because it wasn't a prevision anymore; the time of happening was already in the past. It was a prevision when Agatha dreamt it before the murder of Anne Lively; and because her version of the (then) future event was different from Arthur's and Dashiell's, it was also a minority report. But that prevision was erased from the archives (by Burgess, probably).

In other words, "echoes" are merely previsions that occur (again) after the time of the event has already passed. (Whether that means that the shown event in such cases has also really taken place in the past or not, is not made clear in the movie. I think the characters wrongly assumed that a murder that is depicted in an echo is always one that has been successfully averted; hence "oh, it's merely an echo; we've already seen this one before".)

As John explains the murder to Lamar, Agatha starts having her previsions of Anne Lively's murder. The techs are baffled by this. Only Agatha is having a prevision, and it's not a future murder. "Whatever this is, it isn't the future. It already happened." And what do we do with previsions that have already happened? That's right, we delete them!

I don't have a problem with Agatha reliving a case that was personal to her. My problem is why did the techs think this was a reason to be concerned? So Agatha is dreaming about a drowning victim? Oh, that's an old closed case. Erase the incoming.

Oh, you mean specifically that scene near the end? Sorry, I read your opening post incorrectly.

I always took it that Jad and Wally had been instructed in advance (either by John or his wife Lara) to forward Agatha's incoming visions to the screen in the ball room where Lamar's reception was held, in order to expose Lamar in front of the whole party.

In other words, unbeknownst to Lamar while he was preparing for his speech, Lara freed John from Containment, told the techies at PreCrime Department the truth about Lamar and how John was innocent, and laid out her plan to expose Lamar and convinced the techies at PreCrime to help her.
