The society in the movie - totalitarian or democratic?

It'd be interesting to know.

Movie bypasses this question completely or moves closer to normal republic.

OK, look at the real world and compare the democracies or totalitarian regions out there.

Is any of them NOT trying to control your internet, spy on you, hacking your emails, etc. etc.?

So basically, Minority Report can be any kind of society out there.

I just find the movie depicted society so hypocritical that the project is about preventing crime from happening, but at the same time they keep 3 people locked up as slaves.

Well, one could argue that that society's government wasn't really about preventing crime, but about keeping the populace happy and blissfully unaware, so that the populace would keep spending money instead of revolting against the government for the many problems (drugs, bad housing, unemployment, work-related stress etc.) that still existed. Panem et circenses.

Totalitarian. It's a society that accepts so much State interference in the lives of its citizens that it arrests people who might commit a crime (based on the predictions of 2 out of 3 psychic mutants, the third prediction being the "minority report") but haven't actually committed one. And it's presumably democratic, because it's an elected government. Don't make the mistake of thinking that a democratic society can't be totalitarian. Totalitarian is not jackboots and torchlight parades, it's the penetration of the State into every sphere of your life. A totalitarian society does not recognize any area of life that is not liable to State interference.

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

Oh I don't know about that. I think it's more that the film takes place in a certain society where this is happening (at least, for a period), but the film isn't ABOUT that society. The system / government is just a backdrop behind the agency behind the program that is the main subject in the story.

Totalitarian democracy. The only thing that keeps a democracy from exercising total control over everyone is if a sizable percentage of the people don't trust the government. Once a majority sees the government as a way to make other people live the good life (as they see it), it's game over.

Totalicratic.
