Right after the game Jamal lost he went to the library and wrote a letter.
Toward the end of the movie when Forrester reads the paper called "Losing Family" in from of the class, is that what was slipped under his door by Jamal's brother? The reason I ask is because it starts off by "Losing family, not only family from blood but etc" almost like he's referring to a great friend or friends.

In a word, yes.
I always thought Forrester's line after he read it should have been:
"I didn't write it. Jamal Wallace did. LAST NIGHT."
The last part being added on. It would have been another dagger into Crawford. Not only did he write it, but he wrote it in one evening, following that emotional game.

He should have said, "I didn't write it. Jamal Wallace did. LAST NIGHT. After the game. In one take. In about 20 minutes. No corrections, no rewrites. Bam, zoom, done. How you like them apples, Professor Crawford?"
