"Over the Rainbow"

At the closing credits, there's a really neat rendition of "Over the Rainbow" played. I swear it sounds so familiar, like maybe a commercial or another movie.

Does anyone know where else this verion of the song has played? Thanks!

Actually, the version on "You've Got Mail" is preformed by Harry Nilsson. The version on "Finding Forrester" was preformed by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. I'm not sure where the origional poster head the Israel version before, but I know it was used in commercials and possibly other places as well.

Rob,
I know exactly what you mean. Even as a total "Wizard of Oz" fan I really like this version. I thought the style was off, but it worked. I heard it again on a car commercial I think, but I', not sure. Like you, I didn't recognize it until later and then never thought about it. But I think it was a car commercial. I'm so gald I'm not the only opne who liked that song.

YOu should perhaps research Izzy. He is a uke player with a very very sweet voice. He weighs about 800 lbs and is a wonderful human being. I heard he got up in the middle of the night and recorded this melody, it is many many people theme song or feel good song. People discover it and take it as their special song. That is what I did. It has been featured on NPR and yeah a few movies and ads.
Isreal is a an angel , he died a while back but thru his music and spirit he lives on for many of us. OK good luck, B

That version of "Over the Rainbow" was in a commercial for E-Toys, a remake of Meet Joe Black with Brad Pitt, and in an episode of ER when Mark (Anthony Edwards) dies.

The song is by Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo`ole

This is indeed a great version of "Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakwiwo'ole. You can find it on his album "Facing Future." It was also in the sound track of "Meet Joe Black." I recently heard it on public radio and tracked it down myself. You can read about Iz here: http://www.mele.com/Farewell/tribute.htm.

I think that I remember the beginning of this version of "Over the Rainbow", being played on the old E-toy commercials, also.

yah there is also another more subtle background-music-type version of over the rainbow during the movie when forrester is asleep. both times I heard over the rainbow it seems innapropriate to the actual theme of the movie. i couldnt see how such a well known song had a place with the events going on. i could be wrong if anyone else disagrees withme it just seemed inappropriate for what was going on.

Also on E.R. when Mark Greene finally succumbs to his brain tumor this version plays. Sure pulls at your heart strings.

it also plays at the end of '50 First Dates'

Before I looked in the end credits I thought it was sung by Eric Clapton, since he's apparently got his own version of the song. Of course, it's probably not fused with "Wonderful World"

I heard it first on "50 First Dates"

I recognise the guitar sound as that of Bill Frisell, that's why I checked out this thread, to see it anyone could confirm it. But thats my qualified guess. The song's used a lot during the movie.
If you've seen The Million Dollar Hotel you can probably recognise the pristine tone and sensitive feel.

The 2 versions of Over the Rainbow may seem a little out of place, but their particular arrangements accompanied the scenes pretty well, at least for me. I especially loved Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version. It is optimistic, and helps end the movie on an upbeat note.

I watch Finding Forrester every now and again, and just before the end credits roll, you see the manuscript that Forrester had written, and then the camera pans up to peer through the window at the guys playing basketball. I always get the sense we are watching the guys as Forrester used to, from the same vantage point...like he were still in the apartment and still watching over Jamal.

and of course the melody with Wonderful World worked in makes it a great song. Sweet Angel Izzy K did it for all of us to cherish forever.

Great song. Heard it in all the aformentioned movies: Meet Joe Black, 50 First Dates, Finding Forrester. I also heard the uke rift in a Kellogg's Rice Krispies commercial I believe.

reply

I could have sworn it was used in a Tide or Downey or some kind of mama and baby commercial too, just the strumming and humming.

Insomnia, watched the last hour of Finding Forrester, so wonderful, the music Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World is amazing great, very uplifting, adds an uplifting twist to the end of the movie. Sean Connery's character died at the end, but he lived his life, and made it back to Scotland to spend the last months of his life. So wonderful. I saw this movie in the theater back when it was released and was uplifted by Iz's version of these songs back then as well. Mahalo.
