did carlson know from the beginning that miles was a criminal? you'll see when his boss yells "CARLSON!" and he's reading a file...was it Miles Logans?

I wondered the same thing but I don't really think he knew who it was till the end. He knew something was wrong, but the thing is what would they really arrest him for, he already been to jail for breaking and entering

I think Carlson only knew right at the end for sure. I think throughout the movie he suspected it, but wasn't certain.
Most definitely when he tried to pull up the nonexistent badge number.
And you're right he was reading Logan's file in the beginning.

But I think the real reason CArlson let him go was because he saved his life too. Remember Malone thre himself him harm's way (and gave up a chance to kil Deacon) to pull Carlson out of the line of fire during the drug bust.

yeh i think he only knew for sure at the end. but how d'u know he was readin logan's file at the beginnin?

We do see Carlson reading a file at the beginning when Malone/Miles first gets to the office (the do I know you? you wouldn't happen to be in a bowling league? scene) but I can't tell if it's Miles' file. Too far away.
