Code Red is working on this title for a DVD release in the near future. A commentary track with Caren Larkey and Sal Romeo has been completed. Good news indeed. :)
"You give me back my ball... I'll give you yours" - Viggo Mortensen in Renny Harlin's 'Prison'
I haven't seen this movie in over 20 years, but I remember really liking it. I just bought a VHS copy on Amazon because I didn't see it available on dvd. Cool "Prison" quote sf12169!
I watched my Sole Survivor tape last week, and the movie has held up nicely. Even as an adult I still find it creepy and unsettling! I have Prison on VHS as well, and have been meaning to watch it again. Viggo is up for an Oscar this year, maybe someone will capitalize on this and put it on dvd already!
It would be a shame if Code Red bungled this release. They signed a distribution deal with BCI/Navarro, which should have taken care of their earlier issues. BCI manages to get their Naschy films onto shelves all around...
I preordered this from amazon in early March, but nothing has shipped. There is a glowing review of the DVD on Amazon, though.
Hopefully, Code Red will answer my email, as I'd like to know what's going on.
I received a reply from Code Red DVD regarding the fark-up on amazon. What CR claims is that Amazon ordered items from them, and should have them in stock, so they don't know what's going on. CR also claims that Amazon might be holding back orders (what they called "freezing a film") so that they can "raise the price up" from 14.99 to probably 17.99. CR goes on to say that Amazon did this same thing with Don't Go in the Woods (the original release).
Did anyone order Don't go in the Woods through Amazon and experience this problem?
Here is part of Amazon's response that specifically mentions Sole Survivor:
"Please allow me to explain that sometimes unexpected fluctuations in supply can add time to our original availability estimate. We have learned that "Sole Survivor" is now back- ordered, and our supplier has not been able to let us know exactly when they expect to have more in stock."
So, who to blame? I found Sole Survivor for order on the Target and Deep Discount DVD sites, Barnes & Noble and diabolikdvd. I presume even more sites have this title. Amazon seems to be the one who has blocked the ability to order it due to having none in stock.
After work today, I'm going to cruise by some stores and see if Sole Survivor is on the shelves. If so, I'm going to pick it up, and then cancel my amazon order. Hopefully, they won't botch my preorder of Boardinghouse (or Lucker, for that matter).
I purchased this movie a few days ago from Hastings Entertainment for only $13! If any of you live in the Midwest you'll know that Hastings is an awesome Books, CDs, and movie place which you can find hard-to-find horror flicks....I've bought basically all of my early 80s slashers flicks from there:) Somehow I found Girls Nite Out (1984) in the adult movie section though?? haha. BTW, Sole Survivor was for sure an exceptional movie, not only in the slasher genre, but in every aspect! Maybe this DVD release will give more people a chance to experience the originality and genuinely creepiness of this unique film!
Amazon finally coughed up a copy after a 2-day delay. I, too, am impressed. The transfer is clean--there's only one instance so far of grime, and it's at the very beginning--and the supplements are fine. Great trailers. It's a good DVD for the price.
Watched mine and I wasn't too impressed - especially during the first half.
The brightness seemed to vary during scenes and sometimes the colours would fade and then come in too strong. Now I realise that there is a reason why NTSC is known as 'Never Twice the Same Colour' - lol - but jeez... my NTSC VHS version of this film was much better.
The second half - roughly - was better than the first brightness- and colour-wise. The audio was impeccable throughout so this isn't a total washout.
Looks like I'll be holding on to the VHS...

The Sole Survivor DVD is grainy, but frankly, I don't care. The film itself overides any lighting problems I have with it. Plus the features! And to think, I thought Code Red just released bad guilty pleasures. SS is one of my favorite 'new retro finds' (contradictory?) of the year. Creepy.
I'll have to get this one now that it's available on dvd. I would get Don't Go in the Woods but the copies I've seen are pretty steep. I can only justify getting that fabulous crapfest for under $10!
I've seen both of these plus The Forest for $10. Wasn't going to pick up 'Don't Go' and The Forest, but Sole Survivor definitely looks like quality. Might drop $10!
