Has anyone listened to the DVD 'comedy' commentary?

And more importantly, did anyone actually think it was funny or necessary? I only listened to enough of it to realize how incredibly stupid it was. The people doing it obviously thought this movie was a good candidate for "MST3k"-type humor, but ultimately showed they were stupider than the movie ever could be! At least in my opinion...

SPOILERS!!

I just finished watching UNHINGED and noticed the 'Comedy Commentary' option, though I didn't bother with it and I doubt I will in the future.
I'm not a fan of the MST3K treatment at all. If a movie is so bad it's good, I'll derive my own humor from the situation. Don't need to be spoonfed someone else's wise-cracks.
UNHINGED left me more baffled than amused. There were more plot holes than a graveyard and how in the hell would a mother not know what sex her kids were?
Glad it only cost me $7.

not that i'm going to defend this movies plot holes.. jesus.. i'd have to REALLY play devil's advocate on that one.

But i think it's within reason she could be persuaded to believe her son to be a daughter.. she was pretty wacked out on everything else.

I never thought i'd say this, but Sleepaway Camp handled this sort of a "gender confusion" storyline better. I never thought i'd say Sleepaway Camp did anything better than ANY film before.

Nothing wrong with Sleepaway Camp, good cheesy fun with a great ending. Also nice to see a slasher where the teens and kids talk like real teens and kids.

Hey, this guy's not gonna leak all over my ice cream, is he?

I thought the "secret" he/she was referring to was the killing, and I assumed that the nutbag mother was just delusional about the gender thing.

Other than that, I don't think there was enough plot for there to be holes.

reply

I just figured since the mom hated men so much she pretended her son/daughter/thing wasn't a boy and forced her/him/it to pretend.

I agree, the mother was in a state of denial about the gender.

Pretty pointless to be criticizing thing movie's plot. One thing that was hard to ignore, however, even for this film, was the way are told the blond friend was "pretty banged up" and then her friends seemingly don't even go into her room to see her for what feels like days! Eventually the girl walks in to her friend's bedroom more than halfway into the movie like it were no big deal.

But to get back on topic, the commentary was idiotic.

I actually did listen to the whole thing. It was rather stupid, as I expected, as were the people involved. I also did not think the film was nearly as bad as they made it out to be.

I must say though, the funniest thing about the commentary is how it cuts off at the end with one guy saying something along the lines of "WHAT? Wait, so the daughter's actually a dude? How could the mom not know? I'm so confused! Seriously, how..."

I'm in complete agreement with you. I just finished watching it, and I'm still annoyed! Here are my thoughts, which I posted under a different topic:

The terrible commentary by "The Detractors" was by the far the most obnoxious, hackneyed, insulting, and unnecessary feature I've ever experienced on any DVD. As the original poster pointed out, this group of writers and would-be gadflies strives to be MST3K, but ends up sounding like an inarticulate group of drunken frat kids with no understanding of low budget horror. It’s the sort of reaction you’d get from a 5 year old who has just been exposed to surrealism for the first time. “That is SO stupid! Stupid! I don’t get it!” They make fun of one actress’s teeth. Nudity gets overreactions of “whoa, yeah!” They attempt to skewer overhead camera angles by making bird sounds. They see the name of the director and joke about how he hasn’t achieved a high level of success. Great satire, really great. Way to stick it to Don Gronquist. How brave. Basically, it’s really, really embarrassing. The worst part is that Unhinged isn’t even that bad. For a cheap horror film from 1982, it’s competent and entertaining. The fact that these people, with no knowledge or comprehension of low budget horror, were hired by the distributor to childishly insult everyone involved in the making of the film is offensive to the viewer, as well as the cast and crew. Seriously, when you’re the creator of “Too Much Coffee Man,” you really shouldn’t be throwing big, banal stones around your little glass Portland-area apartment. If you want to start an anti-Unhinged website, feel free. But why this desperate and mean-spirited attempt at comedy was included in the official release is inexplicable. If there’s any poetic justice in this world, everyone involved with this Detractors debacle will have their artistic work showcased 25 years after its creation, only to learn that it is being done so for ironic purposes, and a group of children who know nothing about comics or journalism is outside waiting to point out Brian Vandiver’s bad teeth and Shannon Wheeler’s receding hairline.

the commentary was hilarious (how could it not be with a movie like this?). you're comparing surrealism to low budget horror? you must be out of your mind. i could do low budget horror better than this. my friends would make better actors, for one, and i'd like to think i'm at least a slightly better storyteller. if you wanna talk about people "not getting" a film, than talk about a film that could not have been made by a 5 year old, with an ounce of artistic value.

You must have little understanding of comedy, much less horror, to have enjoyed this commentary. You honestly think it’s funny to say things like “yeah, she’s the hot one!” or “oh, yeah, boobs, yeah?” These comments made you laugh out loud? Even if you thought Unhinged was fantastically stupid, which is a justifiable position, albeit one with which I don’t agree, this commentary does nothing original to frame that stupidity in a humorous or unique way. Anyone can laugh at amateur acting. How is that clever? It’s old, hackneyed, and passé. Simply because both you and the commentators despise the film does not mean you should blindly accept the tripe they are peddling. Critique the critique. Unless you are of the mindset that, since you don’t like the film, anything negative said regarding the film is automatically funny, I cannot understand your position. Any sane person with even the slightest exposure to successful comedy would agree that the commentary falls flat. You should try to analyze the comments of “the detractors” beyond your initial agreement.

No offense, but your opinion that you could make a better movie is completely unfounded. It’s not as easy as it looks. Anyone remotely involved in low-budget filmmaking knows that their friends, in fact, cannot act, and their wonderful stories don’t always translate well. By dismissing the entire process, you’re exhibiting how little you know about film and the low-budget art form. The camera work and tone in this movie are actually quite good, especially considering the limited resources. From an objective standpoint, relative to most low-budget horror films, Unhinged is not that bad. This might be hard for the average person who doesn’t watch movies with budgets less than 50 million or so to believe, but it’s true. Anyway, the crux of this matter has nothing to do with your perception or opinion of the film. First, let me reiterate, the commentary was simply not funny. If the film was half as stupid as you believe, I’d like to think that any writer or comedian with half a brain could formulate a better bit than pretending Don Gronquist is famous. I did that sort of thing when I was 12. Secondly, the condescending, sometimes personally vicious commentary should not have been part of the official release. Whether or not you appreciated the film, there are people who do. How would you like it if you purchased one of your favorite movies, only to be subjected to a mean spirited commentary performed by intellectually deficient boors with no knowledge of or connection to the film?

"i could do low budget horror better than this. my friends would make better actors, for one, and i'd like to think i'm at least a slightly better storyteller."

So then why aren't you? Or have you? Is your film out for us to rent? If it's so easy for you and your friends to make a better film, then where is it?

Hey, this guy's not gonna leak all over my ice cream, is he?

Those people on that commentary should go back to watching overproduced Hollywood movies. They just don’t understand movies like this. I’m not saying this movie is a brilliant piece of work, but I find something charming about it. I live in Portland and I rented this movie not knowing anything about it. I was shocked to see it was filmed here. I must say that if I were to run into any of the actors or the director, I’d feel like I’d have to apologize to them because of that idiotic commentary. And if I run into anyone from the commentary, I’ll give them a kick in the ass.

wow... a feeling of overwhelming dissapoint has set on me. i've just finished watching the film and thought it was a complete masterpiece. i couldnt wait to light up a joint and watch it again with the featured commentary, but then i came here to read the commentary is trash. dammit.

i wish they got the director to do one.

"how about... a royal flush!" *loren avedon kicks a cauldron of boiling water into the bad guys*

Didn't hear the commentary, really not interested in snobs mocking a movie and besides I know what's funny and what's not. Just finished watching this little horror movie and I got to say with all the plot holes and absurd acting and cheap effects, that ending is what sold it too me, ultra creepy and nasty.

hey that commentary was hilarious!!!! they make fun of the story, charcters u name it its in there i havent laughed that hard in a long time. especially when the girl is approaching the mysterious shack and the lady comes running out of the house screaming not to go in there, and with the commentery on, shes over-dubbed with " no!! no dont go in there! theres a better movie going on in there!!!! u r not qualified and never will be!.........." LMAO!!!!!!!!!!! we need ALOT more features like this on dvd's!!!!!

There were a few decent jokes, but ultimately, it was more of an annoyance than a treat. From the get-go, I think it was a bad idea to invite that many people to do an unscripted commentary. They ended up constantly talking over each other, and the uneven volume levels didn't help things either.

I'm not opposed to riff commentaries in general, but this one wasn't very good.
