Is it closer to the book than the American remake?

So I absolutely adore Ring, I bought it a few years ago just to pass a few hours on a 9-hour flight, I've always meant to buy the sequel (and I think I've read that there's a third book?), but I really don't like how different the American remake of Ringu is from the book, but it's kind of to be expected considering it's based on a movie based on a book. So I want to know if Ringu is any closer to the book than The Ring is?

I haven't seen the US re-make as I loved the original so much I would worry the US version may ruin it for me.

The book however I do own all three. The second one is good (though not in my oppinion up to the standard of the first) and the third goes so off the rails its kind of hard to follow ( I did start to loose track of what was going on but it is good). The books are as follows:

Ring
Spiral
Loop

There is also a forth book called "Birthday" which I am yet to read but is split into three stories and covers details of the three books more. Also, if you haven't read it track down Dark Water, its a series of short stories by Suzuki and worth reading in my oppinion.
