This is probably just urban legend... But I heard someone mention recently that when this movie first came out in Japan, many people were so disturbed by it that they were driven to suicide. Has anyone else heard anything about that?
(Okay, even as I was typing that I'm thinking it's probably a hoax/legend... Even so, I'd just be interested to know if anyone else has heard such rumors.)

Never heard of such a rumor. Given how pointless suicide is without true, honorable purpose it would run contrary to Japanese cultural believes I think.

As with most 'news' about Japan like that it is made up or simply the product of some gross generalisation or external cultural assumption. AS a resident Japan, I see daily in the English media, 'new Japanese trends' which simply don't exist. That girls licking doorknobs, for example, was an art project. All those 'crazy inventions' are either industrial design/art exhibitions or jokes.
