Different versions?

Not content wise but atmospherically or more specifically regarding color grading/hues. When I first saw Ringu it was on a bootleg vhs. This was a couple of years before it was availiable through legit means here in the states. Well after the success of The Ring, Ringu was given a legal DVD release. I remember being extremely disappointed with the legit release as it looked so bland where as the bootleg (that I still wish I had!) had this really creepy blue hue throughout and especially during the creepier scenes.

Anybody know what I'm talking about? Any legit ways to obtain this other version? It's sort of like the original VHS release of The Evil Dead, it ALSO had this really creepy blue-ish tone to it....which was completely absent in every release since that initial version!
