So why did they spend the night trying to get the water out of the well?

I watched this original Japanese version of The Ring a few years ago. I checked it out because I liked the American one alot so I decided to check out the original. Didn't like it, wasn't as scary. But there's this one scene I found so stupid, I thought I finally decided to ask here. In the American version, when Rachel is in well, she just splashes around the water to look for Samara and finds her. For some reason, in the Japanese version they decide to spend the entire night emptying the water out of the well by the bucket...Why???? It even costed her a large portion of the 7th day.

Truthfully, Ryuji could have just dove and felt around for Sadako-- even with the water so murky-- since the well was not too deep. However, he probably didn't want dirty corpse water on his face so he just made Reiko pull up enough buckets so that neither had to fully immerse into the water.

And don't they know how to use a well?! You lower a bucket, it FILLS ITSELF, and then you pull it out. There is no reason for someone to crawl down inside and navigate water into a bucket while a hundred pound Japanese girl is forced to lift dozens of buckets of water all by herself. Bleeping ridiculous, and it's such a long scene!

"You lower a bucket, it FILLS ITSELF".

Not necessarily to the full capacity though - especially with plastic buckets that tend to float.

The whole thing with the well ended up being a waste of time since they thought that finding Sadako's body would lift the curse for her, Ryuji and their son. By the end of the movie, the viewers would realize that his wife's curse was actually already lifted the moment she made a copy of the tape earlier on in the movie.

The curse is not lifted, it is delayed.
