I interpret the ending of Ring and the scene in Ring 2 differently; at least what we learn in Ring 2 anyway.
In Asakawa's death scene she sees her father, who turns to her and asks her something along the lines of "didn't we save Yoichi?" The implication is that he watched the video (copied by Yoichi) willingly and with full understanding of the consequences of doing so; but rather than pass on the curse (or so believed) that chain of the curse was to die with him.
