Edmund/Fanny kiss in end scene

I hereby declare this kiss officially the best/most romantic kiss in cinematic history. Anyone with me?

Nah, I actually liked their almost kiss better than their actual kiss. The weird camera angles made it look really awkward. The almost kiss was great - there was so much UST there.

As for best kisses in cinematic history, have you seen the BBC's adaptation of North and South?

"I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul."

reply

Yeah I agree. The almost-kiss was flawlessly done. Johnny Lee Miller is so good at subtlety.

Totally agree about JLM - have you seen him as Mr. Knightley in the BBC's mini-series of Emma? He is just about the best Austen hero out of any adaptation, ever, IMO. There's something so down-to-earth, charming and boyish about his Mr. Knightley, and his relationship with Emma just seems right - more friends and equals than father figure, as it's been played before.

reply

Yes I absolutely LOVED him in the new Emma. You're right, he just nailed the part perfectly. So subtle and charming, I was swooning all over the place.

'Subtle and charming' is the perfect way to describe the role - and as I wasn't swooning over him until the dance in episode 3, I can well believe that Emma herself would be blind to her love for him until close to the end when jealousy wakes her up - as Mr. Knightley, JLM is not instantly, obviously, overtly attractive, but grows on you slowly; and then when you rewatch you can't believe it took you so long to fall for him (you feel pretty much like Emma herself would have).

In fact, I prefer that 'growing on you' feeling - actors who are extremely overtly good-looking all too often coast upon their good looks and don't really make the character the one you fall for.

reply

Yeah I agree. The 'growing on you' feeling is one which must be very difficult to pull off, both from the director's pov and the actor's.

All credit to Jonny Lee Miller though. I just can't fault him.

reply

Hmm. It sounds like you don't think JLM is good looking. I would seriously disagree with that.

reply

I second all of that :) Love North and South adaptation.

reply

I agree with this. I definitely hit rewind and watched the almost kiss more than a few times because it seemed so passionate but the one at the end was in my opinion not that special.

reply

I love the almost kiss. Everyone does, there's always so much passion and UST like you said.

I think that's because they always seem to happen in an tense and emotional moment. There's all that build up and DENIED.

reply

I absolutely love the scene in the coach when he fetches her from her hometown.
Man that was some intense non verbal communication going in there. I get goosebumps when I watch that scene. So much wanting and not being able to do anything about it.

reply

I agree totally. Goosebumps indeed!

reply

Yup the kiss seemed awkward ... If you want to see a romantic kiss, you should see 'A room with a view'.

reply

The best romantic, cinematic kiss in history is and will always be between Johnny and Penelope in the movie Penelope...

Well that's because it's James McAvoy

OMG, I have no idea why I hadn't seen this before. FANTASTIC! I cried when Edmund didn't stand up for Fanny. Why does she (and we) forgive him so easily??

I have to say that the best kiss yet is the one between the newly wedded Mr. and Mrs. Darcy in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice. When he keeps kissing her gently all over her face, murmuring, "Mrs. Darcy...Mrs. Darcy" between kisses. I get chills every time I watch it!

reply

I second this!

reply

I laughed. It was incredibly awkward, like she didn't really have chemistry with him.

reply

I like it when the couple shows a bit of restraint, it's more romantic than tongues everywhere.
