I would imagine there were probably some black guards who were sympathetic to him. Maybe some white guys too.
Probably more than anything else at first the guards would mainly want to keep him calmed down and not openly rebellious, since he could certainly do a hell of a lot more damage with his fists than the normal inmate, so early on they may have just played along and pretended to take his professions of innocence seriously.
But then as the years go by and they learn more about the case, they might think, "damn, some of this evidence is pretty shaky, who knows, maybe he really might be innocent."
