Why do you think he smokes?

its odd that in this day and age NO ONE smokes on TV anymore, becker did, i dont like the show much, but i have to say, its funny to me that he choose to.

my question is, why do you think they made that choice?

reply

He's dealing with people pissing on him every single day, he's got have some kind of stress outlet.

reply

I agree they probably did it as stress outlet. I know quite a few people who work in the medical field that smoke.

reply

I think its cool, people smoke, everyone on TV used to smoke, im glad he knows its still out there and is playing with it!

i dont smoke, but people do, and the lack of it on TV is annoying. good stuff.

Ted Danson is a chain smoker in real life; but They probably used fake cigs to be PC and courteous of the other actors.

reply

I think he smoked for the added irony that a doctor smokes. Also a few episodes were focused on him smoking and many jokes were made between the cast members about it.

reply

The way things are going it won't be allowed at all, I expect the powers that be will consider it promotion.

I find it EXTREMELY refreshing. Noone smokes on TV anymore, and people have become so bigot about it really is something new to see a main character holding a cig n his hand and actually enjoying it. it's one of the reasons I love Becker

reply

I absolutely loved Becker back then because the show so sweetly reflected how it felt to live in an america where George Bush jr was president.

Ok I dont know that first hand, but here in Europe, thats how it felt.

Everything just went downhill. Life was a pain. The USA was suddenly an evil place. It never had been an evil place before.

And about Becker smoking, its part of his character, and its funny. I wouldnt heroize it too much though. In reallife, I absolutely hate it when people smoke.

It's because doctors smoke at a higher demographic incidence than one might think.

They also take the drugs they have unrestricted access to, and have a really high suicide rate.

It's an incredibly high pressure life style, always on call, under extreme stress, and once one has become addicted to nicotine, it's an easy release to get that bit of endorphin every once in a while.

I'm not a doctor (but I play one on television...NOT [laugh) but I work in a similarly high stress profession, and when I quit about 15 years ago, I lost a deep and profound relationship with a well loved friend.

Addiction is just like that, isn't it?

Smoking tobacco is the one vice that I never understood. I could see smoking crack and meth before smoking a cigarette (and, no, I'm not recommending that)!
