I wouldn't mind a doctor like Becker.
I have a current GP who I am very happy with. He is a friendly guy and knows his stuff, but most importantly, he seems invested and actually cares about me and my health.
I am a bit of a doctor cynic. I think there are some very good doctors, and some poor ones as well. Some have moved heaven and earth for their patients, while others who people I know have dealt with seem a bit too casual and laid-back, and don't instill confidence.
Becker might be a grump, but he generally treats his patients well. He seems to know his stuff, and I can tell that he cares about his patients. He has even been shown going through research books to figure out diagnoses when he isn't sure what it is, and in one episode, he stayed at the hospital until he knew that a patient he diagnosed was being taken care of.
Also, Becker seems to have a good reputation with most patients, and a few come again and again, and in that part of town, people wouldn't do that unless they trust him and want him as their doctor.
A couple of times he has got stuck into a patient, but it is more telling them what they need to hear. Sometimes a doctor needs to get tough with a patient that won't listen, and being tough might wake up the patient and they finally start taking his advice.
Becker complains about his friends, colleagues and life in general, but he seems to be more tender towards his patients, and seems to generally care about them, and I would sooner have a doctor like that than some doctors who seem to like the status it gives them rather than the responsibility it entails.
