winona was the worst part......

Not a bad movie, a lot of good performances. Not just from Joile but also Moss and Duval. But Ryder my God did she suck assss. shes been good in some movies like Beetle Juice or Edward Scissor Hands but she was a bad choice for this. She had three settings, looking bored, pouting or over acting to the point where it was actually hard to watch her. like that part where she is in the tub and yelling at Whoopi. just look at the faces she makes, its terrible. good movie other whys.

The tub scene was supposed to look ridiculous. She was purposely trying to act crazy so the overacting was the character's. As for the rest of it, she was supposed to be pretty emotionless as part of her illness.

well whatever she was trying for, it didn't work.

i told you not to stop the boat. Now lets go. Apocaylpse Now

It didn't work for YOU.

Didn't work for me either. Felt like I was watching a poli sci major beg for a grade in a drama 101 electives class.

Disagree. Winona is amazing.

Indeed. I agree. This movie has my favorite performance from three actresses. Ryder, Jolie, and Brittany Murphy. I also loved Whoopie Goldberg (as always). The supporting cast was solid. Very well acted movie throughout. I was a bit stunned to find the critical reviews so mixed. I loved it.

Agree, on all counts 

Yes, I think this was one of her best roles.

reply

I thought she did well. There were some parts where I did think she was over acting but all in all she was good.

reply

She was flawless actually. Should have scored an Oscar nom for sure.

There are 2 ways to view this 2nd bathtub scene:
1} I think her character was someone who was depressed, suicidal, but she was NOT crazy. She was making fun of Valerie and tried to insult Val as turning herself to be a crazy, sarcastic, immature little girl.
2} As an actor, he/she would need to make a choice to deliver a scene, a choice to deliver a line, or even a choice of what words to stress. Sometimes they chose a way to act out the scene but didn't know they made the wrong choice until the movie came out.... Commonly a director would make an actor do the scene in different ways, and different takes, so later they can choose the "right" interpretations in the editing room.
So when a scene in a movie that doesn't work, it can also be the director's fault; not just the actor's.
It can be a real challenge for an actor to play crazy, or drunk, whether the character is truly crazy or drunk, or just pretending to be.

I think Winona was brilliant in every scene, except this particular one scene :}

reply

haha yes that tub scene was awful , her acting was at its worst in that scene

reply

I really just don't get the hype over Ryder, every role she plays is so dull and miserable. Her only good films are good because of the story and she happens to be there. Jolie and Murphy made this movie for me! Lisa was such a damaged and twisted character.

reply

You took the words right out of my mouth. I don't think she's a good actress, at all. Her lines feels forced and her facial expressions as well. I almost thought I was the only one perceiving her that way.

reply

Ryder was a huge star in 1999. Not so much after this film. That's the legacy of 'GI', it marked a downward trend in Ryder's career and the emergence of Jolie as a star.

The irony was that this was to be a star vehicle for Ryder, complete with Oscar buzz.

she's a bit of a one-note actor anyway, but it works and I thought it worked for this movie

Coming from someone who has BPD.
I think Ryder did a good job of portraying it, not excellent but good.
The bathtub scene for me though, was pretty much spot on, the part where she says all those cruel vile things to Whoopis character without any emotion is exactly what we do if someone hits a nerve.
I think Whoopi called her "lazy" amongst other things + when someone tells you the truth about yourself in a bad way ... You lash out in the most cruelest ways.
And she portrayed it exactly how it is in my opinion.

reply

that sort of reaction isn't unique to people with BPD. I was more referring to how Ryder seems to 'play' the same sort of character in all her roles, kind of like Johnny Depp perhaps.

I though the bathtub scene was ineffective
Her last rant to Lisa about being cold was very well done.
She really was just overshadowed by everyone else especially Angelina.
