What would you call it
I think the name of the film " Boys don't cry" doesn't fit with the story .
If you had the chance to change the name of the film what would you call it ?

The name of the movie is perfect.
shareReally? It was the name of the book as well. So, sit for a while and contemplate the meaning of the title and get back to us, eh?

It's a perfect name for the film. If you've ever seen the documentary, you'd know that Brandon stated that he wouldn't cry when he was being raped, he didn't want them to have the satisfaction. Perfect name for the film.
shareI agree that the name is a little bit of a red herring.
I mean, it's a great name ... catchy, easy to remember, says it all ... but, there's no reference to it in this film, which I usually think is nice poetically, to have a tie-in. As another poster says, there is a reference to the title in the documentary ... possibly. But nowhere that I can recall does Brandon make the point that he should man up and not cry.
Besides, he does cry ... therefore, are the filmmakers really saying that he is a she?
P.S. I feel it's good for men to cry. Doesn't make them less of a man but more.
P.P.S. Maybe that's what the filmmakers were really saying.
She cried in the movie after all the crap that was done to her. Boys don't cry, girls do. Get it? Does it have to be said?

Therefore, an interesting ... and unexpected ... editorial comment on the part of the filmmakers.
shareYes.

Although, actually, moosefeathers, now that I think about it, given the fact that the filmmakers were pretty obviously sympathetic toward Brandon, I think what they really might have meant the title ironically as in its opposite. Sorry. But I thought I better just set the record straight (and not get the LGBT community too mad at me to boot lol).
shareWell, the LGBT is not the end all be all.
It was a well known fact that she was not a male, but a female. Hence, she cried, being of the weaker sex. She might not have cried while being raped, but she cried afterwards.

I'd love to see the "stronger sex" give birth. I'm sure there would be no tears in that painful scenario.

HOW ABOUT "YOU TOO CAN CHOOSE TO BE A FREAK?"

first off, i do think the title is perfect, to the point i wouldn't have even considered an alternate or whatever
but more over, a lot of you seem to be coming at this pretty literally - the phrase "boys don't cry" is something boys are told by adults (usually men) as a way they're "supposed" to behave or act. i think it's more a reflection of that, how people are told to be, instead of just being natural (since boys do, indeed, cry) and that was an issue brandon faced
instead of just being allowed to live his life like he wanted, he was *beep* raped and killed for it, kind of the ultimate extent of punishment for not doing "as your told"
in the case of references to the title or whatev, they did at least play The Cure song "Boys Don't Cry" during the movie, albeit a cover
