This movie is terrible and doesn't resemble anything like Ft Puke and its infamous A.I.T. school. This is a figment of some Hollywood radical's mind.

shareWhat does the af in your name stand for? Air Force? Then I know why you are such a toughie - after all the Air Force has the most rigorous training with weeks and weeks in the woods and only the things you catch to eat. They really know everything about ground combat!
shareFrom my experience in the army, I would say the movie failed to portray basic training in a true way. I would go into detail with this, but I'm planning on writting a thread regarding this point.
I would just like to point out that somehow, the only people who seem to be unable to deal with the situation were Candwell and Bozz and Paxton. And the other two who Bozz helped get out of the army. I mean, the rest of the platoon didn't seem to complain asmuch as those five. And heck, the rest of the platoon did what they were suppose to do and hence didn't get into trouble and hence had a better time. Just like in the real army.
When I joined the army, my sargeants told me that the soldier makes his life in the army. If he is stupid, he'll suffer but if he is smart, he'll have a decent time. And now I know is true.
I went through basic at Fort Polk in 1972, the year after the events of this movie and this is not the way I recall my unit's behavior. Yeah, there are always the macho wannabes and the slackers but they were pretty much gone or settled down by the beginning of AIT. The cadre was tough and all Vietnam vets and yes, we did get punched and kicked but that was the beginning of basic. By the time we went from basic to AIT that was over with.
I have to agree with the original poster though, lots of what happend in the movie is a work of fiction. By AIT we did not make the rookie mistakes that this platoon made.
Hmm well this took place in 71 and to be honest I thought it had a lot to do with basic and I went through it 96. A lot of the same language is used. The intensity is there. Maybe the setting or the circumstances aren't dead on but the feeling is the same. I dont know I am a Marine so maybe they had Marine advisors for the film and thats why I think it's similar to the real thing and you guys dont.
shareI aint saying anyone is lying but it seems like half the people on the imdb boards have been in the army. there are even some guys who say the fought in ww1 and movies like all quiet on the western front were exactly what it was like
sharethis movie rocked. totally reminded of seabees; their attitudes, the rain and training in the mud, we even use the EXACT same equipment (old and used and obsolete, but not in the 70's). awesome flick. 3 thumbs up cuz im a freeek.

I disagree. I'd say it's anti-draft and anti-"going into the army/military for the wrong reasons". Boz helped those two guys get out because one was basically suicidal and the other had responsibilities that should've kept him from being drafted in the first place (ill wife and four kids). If you notice in the one scene a soldier comes up to him and asks him for help and Boz brushes him off. He helped people he knew personally and that clearly shouldn't have been in the army.
